Between studying for midterms and completing a never-ending cycle of essays, it can seem impossible to find time to relax. But making art offers many the perfect opportunity to unwind amid a busy semester.
From free classes at Memorial Union to niche student organizations, it’s easy to get involved in the arts. Whether you’re an art major or have never picked up a paintbrush, there are plenty of ways to venture into the world of art right here on campus.
Make a mess at Wheelhouse Studios
Wheelhouse Studios, located in the basement of Memorial Union, offers activities for novice artists and long-time ceramicists alike. The studios offer a variety of classes taught by experts, including pottery, drawing, painting, printmaking and photography classes.
New participants can attend classes for free during the first two weeks and can then purchase a studio pass for unlimited access.
For those looking for a space to work individually, a 3D art, 2D art and ceramic art studio are available to students for free as well. Wheelhouse Studios is perfect for both those looking to narrow their artistic focus and those wanting to explore new mediums.
Join an art club
If creating art seems like a daunting task, joining a student organization focused on art can help introduce beginners to new art forms and other novice artists. With clubs focused on social change, fashion, clay sculpting and comic creation, everyone can find an organization filled with artists of similar interests.
The University of Wisconsin Art Club is a large organization ideal for those simply getting a feel for their artistic skills. Members can join anytime without fear of commitment and can look forward to creating paper flower and cyanotype prints with the club this April.
Hone your creative writing skills at the Wisconsin Screenwriters Symposium
Looking to channel your creativity into writing rather than visual arts? The Wisconsin Screenwriters Symposium, held April 4-6, is holding free workshops led by television industry leaders. Aspiring writers can learn how to write on a budget, construct compelling arguments and pitch to Hollywood executives.
Students who believe they have a winning story can apply to enter the 2026 screenplay contest. With prizes available for winners in the features, shorts and television categories, this is the perfect opportunity for those wanting to flex their imaginative writing skills.
Enjoy the breeze at the Terrace Art Zone
Coming this spring and summer, the Memorial Union Terrace is becoming an artistic haven with a weekly craft event geared toward artists of all skill levels. At the Terrace Art Zone, participants are given free art supplies to complete a simple, guided activity.
With activities ranging from painting flower plants to creating handmade stamps, visitors can purchase DIY kits and giftable works of art as well. These events, running every Wednesday through Saturday, are perfect for those looking to craft while enjoying beautiful weather.
Attend a guided lecture at the School of Human Ecology
Students often overlook the gallery and studio spaces hidden inside Nancy Nicholas Hall. With a variety of galleries focusing on textiles and material culture, the exhibits offer a more intimate and tactile experience compared to other galleries in the area.
The team of experts in the building host panel discussions and hands-on workshops as well. On April 5, visitors can create their own wooden carved flowers with experienced woodworker Derek Brabender. Visit the events page to learn more about participating in all-level workshops!
