Opinion Editor

The Opinion Editor will run a revamped section that incorporates news commentary, capturing conversations happening on campus and traditional op-ed content. This position will include a daily commitment in the form of posting and editing new and timely content as news breaks, with a greater time commitment on print production nights. He or she will attend daily section meetings, production meetings and prepare the section for the print edition.

The Opinion Editor should also be ready and prepared to serve as a vocal and committed member of the Herald’s Editorial Board.

Digital News Editor

The Online News Editor will lead all news coverage on the Herald’s digital team. The Online News Editor will be responsible for defining the Herald’s online news coverage on a daily basis. This editor will work three nights a week.

This editor will edit and assign breaking news throughout the day and split responsibilities for running news operations on online production nights. They will work closely with the Print News Editor to coordinate coverage and will supervise and assist the news associate editors as they write and report. They will also collaborate with the design and photo departments to frame stories for online publication.

News Associates 

The News Associates will each run a beat (city, campus and state) and be responsible for covering multiple-day stories for print publication. The beat editor position is one of the most rewarding positions at The Badger Herald as many alumni find they learn more as beat editors than in many journalism courses on campus. All reporters are encouraged to apply. 

News Associates should have an avid interest in the news, as checking the news frequently and building close relationships with sources will be important to bringing good content to the print editions. Prior writing experience is preferred, but editing experience is not required. Time commitment is a strong component of the position.

Science Columnist 

The Science Writer will be responsible for planning, writing and coordinating weekly articles concentrated in science or technology-based topics. Strong candidates will have excellent writing or editing experience, the ability to craft eye-catching headlines and deep insight in how to digest highly technical, complex jargon and report on it in a simple, understandable and engaging way.

The Science Writer should have a strong ability for bringing a story to life using visual elements both in print and online packages. This will take communication with our design, photo and, if applicable, video teams.

Video Associate 

The Badger Herald’s Associate Video Director will be directly responsible for the day to day organization and planning of all video production projects being pursued by the organization’s various editorial sections. This paid leadership position entails coordinating and communicating with the rest of the Herald’s video team to plan, shoot, edit and publish content on a weekly basis.

Video Associates will be expected to recruit and coordinate all beat videographers to provide video support for online written stories in the news, arts, sports and banter sections, while also pursuing independent video department features. Video associates will help lead weekly video section planning meetings, alongside the Herald’s Video Director. This position is an intensive but rewarding experience in running a cross-departmental video team, producing excellent content for online viewership.

Web Director 

The Web Director is responsible for maintaining and developing The Badger Herald’s website. This person will be responsible for creating new features, delegating tasks, ensuring the website is running smoothly, leading a team of contributing web developers and maintaining communication with upper management.

The ideal candidate for this position will:

  • Be proficient in HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP
  • Have knowledge of Git/GitHub and hosting a website
  • Have experience with the WordPress platform (preferably with theme development)

Copy Chief

The copy chief is responsible for managing a staff of copy editors, being the second-to-last edit on articles and hiring additional copy editors. The chief must have an in-depth knowledge of both Herald and Associated Press style as well as excellent communication and time management skills.

Design Director

The Design Director is responsible for the production of design for both the print and online products. In addition to contributing to the planning of print editions and producing page designs and special designs for every paper, the Design Director is responsible for leading a team of contributing page designers.

Features Editor

The Features Editor will be responsible for planning, editing and coordinating the cover story for the Herald’s print editions. This position requires critical insight and knowledge of what makes a strong, interesting and investigative long form story. It also requires comprehensive foresight in laying out a clear cut, creative vision for the design of each week’s cover.

Print News Editor

The Print News Editor will be the sole editor responsible for planning, editing and coordinating content for the Herald’s print edition. The position will require an in-office time commitment putting the paper to bed on production nights. This editor will be constantly planning for the next print edition. This will include keeping in close communication with the news associate editors, photo and design staff. Effective collaboration with the Digital News Team to build on stories from throughout the week for the print editions will also be critical to success in the position.

Photo Editors

The Badger Herald’s Photo Editors edit all photo content and contribute many of the photos that appear in the print and online editions, in addition to leading their own independent photo assignments. The editors manage a staff of beat photographers.

Sports Editors

The Sports and Sports Content Editors will serve key roles in shaping the section’s coverage both in print and online. These positions will include a daily commitment posting and editing new and timely content.

The Sports and Sports Content Editors should also come prepared with new and innovative ideas for the section’s content, have strong writing experience and an interest in experimenting with multimedia and alternative storytelling methods for both online and print stories.

Video Director

The Badger Herald’s Video Director is directly responsible for the oversight of all video production for the organization. This leadership position entails coordinating the Herald’s video team to plan, shoot, edit and publish content on a weekly basis for publication.

Video Directors will be expected to coordinate with the rest of the editorial department to provide video support for stories when needed. The Video Director must attend all production planning meetings.

Viral Editor

The Viral Editor is responsible for shareable, creative and engaging online content. This person will work daily, in close conjunction with upper management and section editors, to offer a voice not currently represented on the Herald’s site. This person should be constantly scanning trending social media posts.

A strong candidate for this position should have an intuitive grasp on what people on campus are talking about, laughing at, pissed over and obsessed with. If you feel like you belong at Buzzfeed or Vox, this position is for you.

Editor in Chief

The Editor in Chief is the executive of the Editorial Department. It is this person’s position to set an editorial tone and vision for The Badger Herald’s media content. The EIC is the main spokesperson for the media outlet and a visible student leader on campus. This position requires effective communication skills both internally and publicly, strong organizational skills and sound editorial judgment.

Publisher

The Publisher of The Badger Herald is responsible for the business operations of the organization. He or she will be responsible for creating and adjusting the organizations budget, as well as providing updated financial reports to the Board of Directors on an ongoing basis.

Advertising Director

Oversee the advertising department which includes the Display Advertising Manager, Digital Advertising Manager, and four Advertising Executives including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training and managing these individuals. In addition, this positions handles a variety of clients with specific client focus to the agencies. These relationships are associated with a biweekly goal ranging between $4,000 and $4,750 per executive. In addition to goals, it is assumed the director is pushing the department to hit targets set by the publisher.
