University of Wisconsin’s primary website for course information and assignments, Canvas, was dysfunctional all of Monday morning and afternoon. Students and faculty across campus had to deal with its outage throughout the day.
Canvas is investigating this outage, which began early this morning at 1:04 a.m., according to an ongoing Instructure status update. It was determined that the issue was caused by an operational issue affecting multiple services at Amazon Web Services.
AWS is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud computing platform and provides businesses with a number of computer services, according to AWS.
AWS has been experiencing issues since 12:11 a.m., when it started investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple services, according to AWS Service Health.
Most apps and websites were shut down for over two hours on Monday morning including WhatsApp, the British government’s website and tax services, Venmo and cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, according to The New York Times.
Around approximately 6:00 p.m. Oct. 20, Canvas returned to full function and is now operational for use.
