Associated Students of Madison voted to remove the University Affairs Committee and change the Financial Committee’s name to the Grant Allocation Committee Wednesday.
ASM made several votes of approval on minor policy changes, discussed changes within committees and prepared to wrap up this year’s campaigns.
Soon to be newly named ASM committee to create less confusion among student grant seekers
ASM changed the name of the Finance Committee to the Grant Allocation Committee in an effort to make the role of the committee more clear to students interested in applying for ASM grants.
Rep. Deena Whitwam, Grant Allocation Committee member, spoke in favor of the ASM committee’s name change.
“I think this is fantastic legislation,” Whitwam said. “I think it will really open doors for ourselves to be more accessible to the grant allocation committee and I think the name change will be more straight forward.”
ASM approved the name change with a vote of 20-0.
ASM made its second and final vote to dissolve the University Affairs Committee into the Shared Governance Committee. The decision aims to enable the Shared Governance Committee to be more involved in campaigns on campus.
Nomination Board Chair Matt Walczak said ASM should definitely promote the removal of the UAC.
“Because of the conversations we’ve had there is a lot of overlap [between the committees], and during my time on council, I really do think this collaboration that we are going to be working on would be very beneficial for the organization moving forward,” Walczak said.
A 19-0 vote with one abstention approved the removal of UAC.
ASM’s last meeting of the year is April 27.
