The first week of intramural sports got off to a rough start after a University of Wisconsin student broke his leg during a recreational soccer game at the Dejope Hall fields Monday night.
Two players were going for a 50-50 ball, with both running at high speeds and trying to reach the ball first, and one person came out of that effort with a broken leg, Recreational Sports Director John Horn said.
An ambulance and an emergency medical technician arrived at the scene and transported the student to the hospital to treat the injury, Horn said.
Rec Sports tends to see a fair number of injuries and broken bones, Horn said.
“We tend to see some sort of injury across our division every day, whether it’s an elbow to the face in a basketball game, pulled muscles working out, or, unfortunately like last night, where we put student teams together and had a pretty bad injury,” Horn said.
He said not a day goes by without injury because when 6,000 to 8,000 students a day participate in facilities and programs, which is why Rec Sports spends time training and certifying students, Horn said. Rec Sports deals with these types of things on a regular basis, he said.
