A fire caused $30,000 worth of damage at Capitol Center Apartments, 344 West Dayton St., Sunday night shortly before midnight.
The fire occurred on the fourth floor in room 410 with flames visible from the outside balcony, according to a Madison Fire Department release.
The first alarm sounded at 11:49 p.m. Authorities were notified by an occupant and security guard. The second alarm was automatically triggered at 11:54 p.m., according to the release.
The initial call was reported as a bedroom fire, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Fire Station No. 1, located next door to Capitol Center Apartments, was able to quickly send Ladder 1, Rescue 1 and Engine 1 to the scene. Ladder 1 and Engine 1 extinguished the fire as Engine 3 supplied the water.
Firefighters brought up bundles of hoses to the fourth floor and hooked it up to the water system, a stairwell standpipe, on the floor.
The fire was under control by 12:04 a.m.
Damage consisted of fire and smoke damage to the apartment on fire, as well as some water damage in the stairwell and hallway.
The building, consisting of 16 floors, was completely evacuated and no serious injuries or casualties were reported. According to the release, one person was taken to UW Hospital for minimal burn injuries.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, was on the scene during the fire.
“[The residents] were obviously lucky that the fire station is literally right next door to where the fire occurred,” Verveer said.
Verveer added the firefighters were able to quickly control the fire.
“Flames were visible and were shooting out. It was very scary,” Verveer said. “It’s not every day you see flames pouring out of a window.”
Residents were allowed to return to the apartment complex except for those living in apartment 410.
Approximately 47 personnel responded to the fire, according to the release. Verveer added the firefighters did an “awesome” job handling the situation in a matter of minutes.
Only a few blocks away from the fire, activity on State Street was minimal, according to a release. From 6 p.m. to midnight no traffic obstruction occurred on State Street or on any feeder streets. The fire department only received three requests for fire service.
The Command Post was closed after midnight.
During the three-day Halloween weekend, the MFD received a total of 138 calls, 33 of which were fire-related and 105 of which were EMS related, according to the release.
