The University of Wisconsin student government met Thursday night to discuss recent issues and to update members of the student council on events that occurred over the summer.
A member updated Associated Students of Madison members on UW’s proposed cogeneration power plant, telling the committee that the plant might be delayed several months due to legal battles. Another report updated the council on the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System.
The meeting also heard a proposal for a Homecoming Event Grant, which asked for money to host a parade. The money is needed to pay a city fee enforced on any group that sponsors an event that disrupts traffic; the fee compensates for disrupted bus routes and lost parking meter fees.
The most anticipated item of the meeting was a proposition that revolved around the recent omission of “Jump Around” from the Badger home game last Saturday. Due to Chancellor John Wiley’s decision to reinstate the song during the interlude between the third and fourth quarters, a decision which members of the council praised, the amendment was changed to allow students direct input on decisions that have a direct bearing on student life.
Austin Evans said the resolution was brought up because of what ASM perceived to be a lack of respect for students on campus. Evans added that he hoped the resolution would deter administration of any office from making any “brash decisions” without student input.
The motion passed with one objection that the council had not focused on minority issues.
Other new business brought up included reactions to system pay-range raises, as well as a bylaw change regarding posting rules. All information involving council meetings and resolutions is available on the ASM website.
