Webber carries District 5

District 5 City Council candidate Robbie Webber won the seat Tuesday night, maintaining her edge from the primaries over student candidate Jason Stephany.

Webber held 60.37 percent of the vote, while Stephany held 38.8 percent, 368 votes fewer than Webber. In the February primaries, Webber won 52 percent of the vote with Stephany at just over 35 percent.

Webber circulated from hug to hug throughout the rowdy crowd at Luther’s Blues, along with District 8 City Council winner Austin King and new mayor Dave Cieslewicz, a slate of candidates that swept the student population’s voting districts.

Webber said she almost felt happier that Cieslewicz had won than for her own victory and said she was thrilled to take on new City Council responsibilities.

Webber said she was happy she ran a clean campaign as opposed to Stephany’s campaign.

“Some of the stuff he was throwing around the last few days was pretty nasty,” Webber said.

Stephany distributed campaign material a week ago, warning that Webber would make “tens of millions” in cuts to hurt small businesses, spend more than 40 percent of taxes on “outlying communities” and spend $50 million dollars on “unrealistic transportation programs,” referring to her support of a commuter rail system in Madison.

“I don’t know where he’s getting his numbers from,” Webber said last week in response to the ad.

“I’m looking forward to working on the issues that I know are important,” Webber said.

Webber’s top two priorities on the council are affordable housing and tenants’ rights.

Webber said she plans to support mandatory inclusionary zoning, which would require developers to include affordable housing units in all new developments.

She said she would also discourage the discussion of drink-special regulation on the Council because drink specials are unfairly blamed for students’ attitudes toward drinking.
