Two more troubled members of the UW football team waved goodbye Tuesday afternoon as head coach Bret Bielema announced that defensive lineman Gino Cruse and Antonio Freeman would not return to the team next year.
"After several discussions with both Gino and Antonio, I felt it would be in the best interests of both student-athletes and the Wisconsin football program if they did not return to the program," UW head coach Bret Bielema said in a written statement.
Cruse was credited with eight tackles, including a sack last season, while Freeman did not register a stat as a reserve defensive back.
Cruse, who was slated to be a sophomore next season, was put into the first offenders program last December for destruction of property after he smashed the window of his then-girlfriend's car in February 2005. Cruse was also cited for possession of marijuana and underage drinking at the time.
Freeman also had legal run-ins as, according to a release from the Wisconsin State Patrol, Jefferson County police arrested Freeman for possession of marijuana in January, after stopping the players' car for driving more than 100 miles per hour and suspicions of driving while intoxicated.
The two join former running back Booker Stanley as players that have been released from the team since Bielema took over as head coach. According to published reports by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Freeman and Stanley are considering transferring to UW-Whitewater.
Meanwhile, Bielema also released his first depth chart, letting out a limited chart listing the starter and reserve at each position, and also revealing that former center Mark Gorman would move back to the defensive line and that Jaevery McFadden's move to linebacker from tight end would be permanent.
Perhaps the most notable item on the depth chart is P.J. Hill being named the starting tailback for now, with Jamil Walker and Dywon Rowan tied for the No. 2 duties, and wideouts Luke Swan and Jarvis Minton were listed as the third and fourth receivers, behind Marcus Randle El and Paul Hubbard despite rarely playing this spring due to injury.
Also, sophomore Kraig Urbik, who started every game last season at right tackle as officially been moved inside to right guard to make room for sophomore Eric Vandenheuvel. Vandenheuvel most notably filled in for Joe Thomas after the left tackle went down with a torn ACL in the Capital One Bowl.
