Tony Robinson’s uncle Turin Carter confirmed in an interview with the Isthmus that Robinson took hallucinogenic mushrooms the day he died.
Carter said Robinson was inexperienced with the drug.
“It was a terrible choice,” he said.
According to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article, Robinson hoped to make a spiritual journey.
However, the journey went horribly wrong, forcing Robinson’s friends to call 911. Robinson was fatally shot by Madison Police Department Officer Matt Kenny, who responded to the call.
Young, Gifted and Black Coalition leader Brandi Grayson said the police knew Robinson was on mushrooms and that is why they were called in the first place.
“They understood who he was, they understood his age and they knew what was happening,” Grayson said. “They knew he was having a reaction to a hallucinogen.”
According to the DEA website, the psychological effects of hallucinogenic mushrooms include the inability discern fantasy from reality, and if taken in large doses panic reactions and psychosis may occur.
The Dane County Medical Examiner’s office said they did not have the results from Robinson’s toxicology report yet and could not comment on the matter.
