Residents of a building on the 1800 block of Monroe Street were forced to evacuate Monday night after fire alarms were activated.
According to a statement from the Madison Fire Department, firefighters arrived on scene around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, a resident informed the crew there was smoke in the garage area of the building.
The statement said when firefighters entered the area they saw heavy smoke, however there was no heat and the smoke was gray in color.
A crew continued to search for the source of the burning and the fire was eventually located around the corner from the entry door of the building on the lower level.
According to the report, a piece of plastic hanging from a light fixture in the building was burning, and there was fire on the ground underneath the light fixture.
Firefighters used a water can to extinguish the fire.
According to the report, the garage was filled with smoke and an additional ladder company was requested to assist with ventilation of the area. A fire investigator was also called to the scene.
