A downtown Madison business avoided a fraud attempt Friday after receiving a phone call demanding money.
According to a police report, a scammer posing as a representative from Madison Gas & Electric called the Blue Velvet Lounge on West Gilman Street and told the bar’s owner they owed $745 in payments or service would be suspended in two hours.
The bar’s owner called MG&E, who said the victim should contact Madison Police, the report said.
A police officer contacted the scammer, identified himself as an officer and asked to speak to the scammer’s supervisor, and was transferred to a line that disconnected after several rings, the report said.
The victim did not send the scammer any money, the report said.
