The University of Wisconsin’s chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity surrendered its charter to Sigma Chi International and became inactive, according to a UW news report sent out this afternoon.
Sigma Chi, located at 221 Langdon, can no longer operate as a registered student organization at UW — meaning it can not hold events and activities. Individual students will still be held accountable for any violations of UW’s student conduct policies. This decision comes after the suspension of Sigma Chi this past October.
UW suspended the chapter after it violated the Student Organization Code of Conduct by holding an event at which alcohol was served while the chapter was on probation with alcohol restriction.
The suspension was intended to last until either Jan. 21, 2020, or until the fraternity elected a new executive board. But on Jan. 30, 2020 UW’s chapter notified SCI that it was surrendering its charter.
In the news report, UW’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mark Guthier wrote that UW supports Sigma Chi’s decision and that it showed their commitment to ensuring the safety of students.
“Fraternities and sororities provide many benefits to our students and to the university and we continue to support our fraternity and sorority community,” Guthier wrote, “Together with Sigma Chi International, we look forward to the opportunity to welcome a new Sigma Chi chapter as a recognized student organization at UW-Madison in the future.”
SCI and UW have been working closely on this situation and will continue to as future decisions are made.
