The University of Wisconsin-Madison student studying abroad in Rome, Italy who was reported missing Thursday has been found dead, according to John Cabot University.
Nineteen-year-old Beau Solomon, a finance student studying at John Cabot University in Rome, went missing Thursday night, according to Channel 3000. His body was recovered in Rome’s Tiber River.
Local authorities in Rome are treating Solomon’s death as a criminal investigation, according to university officials.
In a statement released Monday, the school reported Solomon’s death.
“John Cabot University is deeply saddened to announce that the body of Beau Solomon, the missing American visiting student, has been found in the Tiber River. We express our most heartfelt condolences to the Solomon family and to all those who loved Beau.”
UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank said in a statement Monday that she and the UW-Madison community are greatly saddened by Solomon’s death, and UW-Madison is working with John Cabot University and American and Italian authorities to assist Solomon’s family and to support the investigation into his death.
“Beau was a bright and caring young man who lived the Wisconsin Idea through his work at Badger Boys State and his desire to travel and experience other cultures,” Blank said. “Our hearts go out to Beau’s family and friends at this difficult time. ”
Solomon was at a bar Thursday evening with friends, however, when the group left, he was not with them, Channel 3000 reported. When Solomon was not in class the next day, his friends reported it.
Family members told Channel 3000 that Solomon’s credit cards had been used since his disappearance. The news agency also reported that police told the family that Solomon had been mugged and thrown into the river.
Solomon was originally from Spring Green, Wisconsin. He previously studied at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and UW-Richland.
UW-Madison officials said all other students studying abroad with Solomon have been accounted for, and that there is currently no indication of a broader threat to students or others in Rome.
