In response to Gov. Walker’s budget cuts, Chancellor Rebecca Blank outlined a $36 million budget reduction for the University of Wisconsin Friday, which could could lead to the elimination of up to 400 university positions.
In her blog post, Blank wrote while she will continue to lobby for a smaller cut to the budget, the university must begin implementing a budget remedy before the onset of the 2015-16 fiscal year. She said the plan will eliminate and consolidate programs in information technology, agriculture and the arts.
She wrote the $36 million reduction includes $21 million in budget cuts and additionally will move $15 million allocated for specific programs to serve the university’s broader educational mission.
However, Blank wrote the $36 million cut still does not address the entire deficit the university may face, which she said could be up to $96 million in the next fiscal year. She said the out-of-state tuition increases the Board of Regents recently approved on April 10 will provide UW with an additional $17.5 million in revenue.
Blank wrote campus deans and directors will begin taking a closer look at their own programs to decide where to specifically make cuts.
