The University of Wisconsin Police Department is warning students against crossing illegal and dangerous items of their “Bucky Lists.”
A “Bucky List” is a list of plans a UW student plans to do before graduating. Among the most dangerous items on those lists involve climbing up to the rooftop of Bascom Hall, UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said.
Students generally climb up old stairs to the roof at night when it’s dark and difficult to see outside, and in several instances these students have been drinking, increasing their risk of tripping and falling off the roof, Lovicott said.
Lovicott said the activity is extremely dangerous and has police concerned.
“Our number one concern is safety for students in general,” Lovicott said. “We don’t want anyone to fall or get hurt because it is a very dangerous thing to do.”
At this time last year, 38 citations had been written for students caught climbing up onto the roof, Lovicott said.
This year the number has decreased slightly to 35, he said. However, this does not include the number of perpetrators that got away by the time the police were able to respond to alarm calls.

Another popular but illegal item on many Bucky Lists includes sneaking into Camp Randall, Lovicott said. This year, 64 citations have been written out for students attempting to lie out on the 50-yard line inside the football stadium. Although this item on the Bucky List is not dangerous, it’s still illegal, Lovicott said.
“Both are illegal … but Bascom is much more dangerous,” Lovicott said. “You are climbing up many stairs to a roof very, very high up, maybe intoxicated, or maybe it’s just dark out and difficult to see.”
Fines for being caught on the roof of Bascom are $200.50, and the underage drinking fine is $263.50, according to a UWPD statement.
The Badger Herald composed a Bucky List before the school year started, but sneaking onto the roof of Bascom Hall was not included.
