The Madison Police Department arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the Aug. 1 attack on Wisconsin running back Montee Ball Tuesday, according to an MPD report.
The report identifies Wendell J. Venerable, Deonte J. Wilson and Robert A. Wilks – all 21 and students at University of Wisconsin – as being taken into custody and tentatively charged with substantial battery, party to a crime.
According to the original report, five men attacked Ball in the early morning of Aug. 1, knocking him to the ground and kicking him. Ball sustained a concussion and facial injuries in the attack.
During the course of the investigation, the MPD uncovered details of a fight that occurred at a party in the late hours of July 27. According to the report, UW students, UW football team members and other individuals were involved in the fight. One person suffered injuries and was treated at a hospital.
MPD determined Ball was present at the fight but did not participate, the report said. No charges have been filed relating the July 27 fight.
Ball, a senior, ran for 1,923 yards and tied an NCAA record with 39 touchdowns last season. He finished fourth in voting for the Heisman Trophy.
