The University of Wisconsin Police Department was taken on a wild car chase for more than 20 minutes early Thursday morning before officers were able to make an arrest with the help of road spikes.
Police booked Brent Tibbetts, 36, into Dane County Jail on multiple charges which included: resisting/obstructing an officer, knowingly fleeing an officer, second degree recklessly endangering safety, resisting arrest, speeding and driving while intoxicated, according to a UWPD statement.
A UWPD officer responded to a report of a truck swerving and running stoplights around 2:20 a.m. The truck was found on Monroe Street at Woodrow Street, but when the officer tried to complete a traffic stop, the driver refused, the statement said.
The car chase lasted more than 20 minutes and Tibbetts reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. At times, his truck left the road and drove on front yards, and almost hit several vehicles, according to the statement.
Officers used road spikes to finally force his car to a stop, with the help of a Dane County Sheriff’s deputy, the statement said. Tibbetts exited the car and attempted to run away, but a UWPD officer stopped him after a brief foot chase.
Tibbetts reportedly refused a breath test, so his blood alcohol level was unavailable. He also had a warrant for failure to appear in court regarding child support.
