Maurice “Boo” Wade, University of Wisconsin men’s basketball player, was arrested Wednesday on the felony charge of substantial battery of a 19-year-old woman. Wade, 19, was arrested at 1:55 p.m., according to the Wisconsin State Journal, and taken into custody after the victim contacted the police at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. The victim reported Wade came to an apartment she was at on the 600 block of North Langdon Street between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday. While he was there, he began choking her at least two times with his hands. He also used his forearm to choke the woman from behind. Kamholz said he does not know the specifics of the events leading to the alleged assault, or why the woman waited to contact police. The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for “significant injuries” to her neck, which were “consistent with being choked,” Officer Larry Kamholz said in a press conference Wednesday. The woman, whose relationship to Wade is unknown, has been released from the hospital.
Wade will be held in the Dane County Jail until 2:30 p.m. Thursday, when he will appear in front of a judge, Kamholz said. If charged with substantial battery, Wade could face up to three years in prison, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Wade has had prior contact with the Madison Police Department, according to Kamholz, the details of which he would not disclose. Wade does not, however, have a criminal record.
UW announced in a press release Wednesday that Wade has been suspended from the team for violating the Wisconsin Student-Athlete Discipline Policy. Wade was immediately suspended from both competition and practice with the team. He can, however, choose to appeal the suspension.
Men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan said he could make no comment on the allegations against Wade.
Wade, a 6-foot-3 Milwaukee native, has started at guard in 17 of the 18 games in his sophomore season for the Badgers, missing only last night’s 80-66 victory over Minnesota because of the suspension. This season, Wade has averaged 32.1 minutes and 7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game. Last season Wade appeared in all 32 games for the Badgers averaging 3.3 points per game as the team’s sixth man.
