The Associated Students of Madison met in the Student Activity Center April 2 to communicate about committee plans and review new proposals.
The first motion proposed measures to improve career counseling for graduate students. Graduate Student Council Representative Cherish Golden identified the issue as a tendency towards academia-related career counseling, and other resources tend to be self-help based.
Tenured advisors are not well versed in non-academic pathways, Golden said.
Another gap in the current system is the difficulties for international students who don’t feel served by the counseling due to the complexities of work authorization, according to Golden. The motion was passed unanimously.
The Shared Governance Committee received 100 shared governance applications for the 2025-2026 school year. The window to apply is closed, but it may re-open at the end of this semester or the beginning of summer. The committee has committed to focusing on raising the minimum wage and advocating for a more comprehensive Mental Health Advisory Board.
The Sustainability Committee announced they will be hosting an event with called “Watts Next? A Student Roundtable on UW-Madison’s Energy Future” from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 24. The committee is also organizing an “Earth Field Day,” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed by a march to the State Capitol building April 25.
Vote Coordinator Genevieve Lambert shared Monday’s Wisconsin election results and evidence of strong voter turnout. Susan Crawford won the state Supreme Court seat with 55%, Jill Underly won the state Superintendent for Public Education seat with 52.9% and the Voter ID Requirement Referendum passed with 62.8%.
The Grant Allocation Committee has so far funded 85 travel grants, totaling $335,161.41 and 67 event grants, totaling $195,911,18. Open Fund Grants are open, but event grants have been closed due to exceeded allocation.
Chief Justice of the Student Judiciary, Ben Sevart, announced an ongoing case — Harry v. SEC and Hagmeier — is scheduled to be heard Monday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Internal Conference Room. In this case, Harry challenged SEC and Hagmeier on the use of write-in votes in the recent election.
This meeting was the second to last of the 2024-2025 school year, and ASM will meet for the last time April 23.
