The Wisconsin men’s basketball team, pegged by many to make a return trip to the Final Four next season, will test its mettle during the nonconference schedule with a home-matchup with Duke.
The 16th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods schedule was announced Thursday with a game between Duke and Wisconsin — who are ranked No. 2 and No. 4 respectively in ESPN’s early postseason rankings — in Madison highlighting the list.
“We’re excited to welcome Duke back to the Kohl Center,” head coach Bo Ryan told uwbadgers.com. “I’ve known Mike Krzyzewski for a long time and have a lot of respect for him and his program. Excuse the play on words, but this will be a challenging matchup for us. We always try to put together a tough nonconference schedule that will get us ready for Big Ten play, and this certainly fits that category. We have tremendous fans that fill the Kohl Center every game and it’s exciting to be able to reward them with a big-time matchup like this.”
The Badgers will host the Blue Devils Dec. 3, the final day of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge which begins Dec. 1.
2014 will mark the third meeting between Wisconsin and Duke with each team picking up a win on its home court. The last time the two teams met was Dec. 2, 2009, when the Badgers beat No. 6 Duke 73-69 at the Kohl Center.
The Matchup pits the two teams that have enjoyed the most success in the challenge. Wisconsin owns seven wins — the most of any Big Ten team — in the challenge while Duke boasts an ACC best of 13 wins in the challenge.
Wisconsin has played Virginia the last two seasons during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, splitting that series.
Since the ACC/Big Ten Challenge began in 1999, the ACC has gone 10-3-2 in the series, but the Big Ten has not lost the challenge in the past five years, with the two most recent challenges ending in ties.
