The Wisconsin men’s and women’s teams track teams each won three events at the Musco Iowa Twilight.
Freshman Paul Hubbard led the way for the men’s team, which sent only a partial squad to Iowa, by taking home first place in a pair of events. Hubbard won the triple jump with a distance of 50-5 1/4. The mark earned him an NCAA Regional qualification.
Hubbard also pitched in on the Badgers’ first-place 4×100-meter relay. With Hubbard running anchor, UW finished in 40.92 seconds. He teamed with Levonne Rowan, Gustin Smith and Jvontai Hanserd.
Joe Conway won the long jump at 23-8. The sophomore’s distance is also a regional qualifying mark.
Taking second in the 110-meter high hurdles was senior Jon Mungen. Mungen ran a season’s best of 14.39 seconds.
The Wisconsin women’s team also captured three first-place finishes. The Badgers boasted a strong showing in the 5,000 meters as junior Leslie Patterson and senior Michelle Lilienthal finished 1-2. Patterson won the race in a time of 17:28.15 while Lilienthal finished in 17:33.90.
Danielle Ohmen took first in the high jump with a height of 5-8. The mark tied the sophomore’s season’s best mark and also earned her an NCAA Regional qualifying score.
UW’s final first place finish came in the 4×100 meter relay. Wisconsin’s entry of Melissa Talbot, Shuntia Lucas, Erica Schoeller and Venus Washington ran their best time of the season, finishing in 46.18 seconds.
The quartet also had several near misses in individual competition. Lucas ran a personal best of 24.11 to take second place in the 200 meters and then took third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.97 seconds.
Schoeller’s mark of 18-7 3/4 in the long jump placed her second. She also ran the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:01.54 to take fourth place.
‘A Havahla Haynes earned an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman’s time of 10:51.23 was good for second place.
The remainder of the men’s squad spent the weekend at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Three team members ran personal or season’s best times Friday. Juniors Josh Spiker and Matt Tegenkamp each ran personal bests in the 1,500 meters. Spiker improved his NCAA Regiona qualifying time by over a second by running a time of 3:40.36. The score also ranked as the Big Ten Conference’s best this season. Tegenkamp won his heat with a time of 3:41.45.
Dan Murray also ran his best time of the season, a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters. The junior ran a time of 1:48.04, moving him into the Big Ten lead and improving his regional qualifying time.
