Led by senior Malinda Johnson, who finished first in a field of 113 golfers, the UW women’s golf team placed fifth at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout, its best finish since the Fossum Invitational Sept. 20. The men’s golf team took 12th place in the Big Red Classic in Ocala, Fla.
Johnson’s first-place finish gives her individual medalist honors at the Springs Shootout for the second time in her career. The senior standout shot a 71 in the final round Sunday to finish with a three-round total of 217.
After posting an 18-hole collegiate low in the second round of the shootout, UW’s Jackie Obermuller finished tied for 51st place, shooting a 241 in three rounds.
On the men’s side, freshman Garrett Jones led the way for Badgers with a three-round 224 to grab 16th in the Big Red Classic. Behind Jones’ strong performance, Wisconsin totaled 921 to finish 12 in a field of 15 teams.
The male Badgers will enjoy nearly a full month off before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Boilermaker Invitational April 10-11. The women’s team will head to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational April 3-4.
