MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin senior Bethany Pendleton earned her first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor, while junior Adam Mania collected his second such honor from the conference office.
The Badgers have already had four swimmers receive the conference’s top weekly honor, as senior Matt Marshall and junior Carly Piper have been previous winners.
Pendleton finished first in the 400-yard individual medley to help the No. 12-ranked Badgers defeat No. 14 Indiana by 42 points last Friday. Her time of 4:18.31 easily broke the UW Natatorium pool record by almost two seconds in the event. Pendleton was also a member of the first-place 400-yard medley-relay squad that set a new pool mark with a time of 3:45.71. In addition, she swam a leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay that took top honors (3:23.78). Her 400-individual-medley time and the 400-free relay mark each achieved NCAA “B” cut standards.
Mania broke three pool records as the No. 10 men’s team defeated No. 21 Indiana by just three points (117-114). Mania began the meet by achieving the rare distinction of setting two new pool marks in the same event. His 100-yard backstroke split of 48.89 during the opening leg of the 400-yard medley relay helped UW win the event in a record time of 3:18.45. He followed up that effort by setting a new standard in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing at 1:47.39 before ending his outstanding meet performance with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.40).
The Wisconsin men and women each take a 2-1 meet record and a 2-0 Big Ten start into a 5 p.m. dual meet against Northwestern at the UW Natatorium Thursday.
