MIAMI (REUTERS) — Alex Gonzalez homered in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Florida Marlins a dramatic 4-3 win over the New York Yankees in Game Four of the World Series Wednesday.
Gonzalez lined a 3-2 pitch from reliever Jeff Weaver over the left-field wall to end a marathon that lasted four hours three minutes.
The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, with Game Five back at Pro Player Stadium Thursday before the Fall Classic moves to Yankee Stadium this weekend.
The Yankees tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth and loaded the bases with one out in the 11th but failed to score on reliever Braden Looper, who pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings for the win. Weaver took the loss.
The Marlins were one strike away from ending the game in the top of the ninth, but a two-out triple by pinch-hitter Ruben Sierra down the right-field line off reliever Ugueth Urbina tied the game.
It also saved Roger Clemens from a loss in his final major-league start.
Clemens gave up five consecutive two-out hits in the first, including a two-run homer by Miguel Cabrera, but followed that with six-straight shutout innings.
He pitched seven frames, allowing the three first-inning runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He also retired the last eight hitters he faced and left to a standing ovation after striking out Luis Castillo to end the seventh.
Clemens returned to the field and waved to the crowd while several players from both teams joined in the applause.
Florida starter Carl Pavano allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks over eight strong innings. He retired the last 11 batters he faced before Urbina came on and gave up the two ninth-inning runs.
Derrek Lee drove in Florida’s other first-inning run with a single, the last of five consecutive hits Clemens allowed in the frame.
Aaron Boone’s second-inning sacrifice fly accounted for New York’s other run.
