In what was another close game for the Cardinal vs. Herald football matchup, the Cardinal came out of Vilas Park Friday night with a decisive 42-35 victory, capped off by a game-winning interception as time expired by game MVP and the Cardinal’s GameDay co-editor Josh “Too Sexy” Salm.
The game began with Herald captain Drew Hansen losing the beer chug to Cardinal co-captain Cary “Dominating” Dohman, who carried on the legacy of former Sports Editor Brian “Old School” Lauvray’s dominance in the ceremonial chug.
Cardinal quarterback Brad “Rocket Arm” Rysz helped the Cardinal strike big in the first quarter. After a pair of touchdown scores, the Daily Cardinal was up 14-0 at the end of the period.
The Herald finally got into the game and took it to the Cardinal defense in the second quarter, capping their first touchdown drive with a toss to Managing Editor Stacy Hicklin. The Herald put up two more scores before the half, making it a 21-14 game at halftime.
Tensions were mounting by this time, but the boiling point came when Cardinal leader Michael Jones dumped a beer on the Herald’s former Editor-in-Chief Lars Russell after he tackled a Cardinal runner out of bounds. The beer dump was flagged as unnecessary roughness and the Cardinal was forced to punt the ball.
To open the second half, Salm received the kickoff from the Herald and was mauled by the Herald Sports Editor Roger Anderson on the play, resulting in his Terry Tate “The Pain Train is Coming” shirt being torn right off his body.
On the subsequent drive, a shirtless Salm ran a hitch-and-go pattern on the Herald defense and Rysz found Salm deep down the Cardinal sideline for the one-handed grab. Salm shook off the defender for the tying score in the game, making it 21-21.
After not getting into the end zone on a quarterback sneak and turning the ball over on the one yard line later in the game, Dohman intercepted the ensuing pass and put the Cardinal in position to attempt another touchdown. Rysz, diving over the center on a sneak, got the ball over the plane of the goal line.
With two minutes left in the game and the score showing a 42-35 Cardinal edge, the Herald began their drive with a series of sweeps and short passes to threaten to score. However, before the Herald could reach the goal, Salm intercepted the Herald pass in the end zone to cap the victory for the Cardinal.
