The UW men’s golf team climbed two spots in its final round of play at the University of Michigan Golf Course this past weekend.
In a preview of the 2004 Big Ten Championship course, the Badgers ended Saturday’s play tied for ninth place at the par-71, 6,704-yard course. Indiana and Xavier led the fifteen-team field, including seven Big Ten participants, with totals of 573 after three rounds.
Junior Brian Brodell was right behind the individual leader in a tie for fourth, but faded to tenth after his final round. His first round score of 73 was improved by five strokes in the afternoon, with a second round 68. His final round 74 gave him a match total of 215.
As a team, the Badgers took seventh place after the team’s final 18-hole score of 296. That total combined with Saturday’s 302 and 290 marks gave the team an 888 total to finish in seventh place in the 15-team tournament. Xavier stole the team medal with rounds of 288-285-280–853.
Junior Kevin Tassistro led Wisconsin in the final round, shooting a one-under-par 70 to total 221 for the tournament and tie for 22nd. Freshman Ryan Conn shot a third round 73 Sunday for scores of 77-75-73–225 in a tie for 38th. Leading the Badgers overall was Brodell, who shot rounds of 73-68-74–215. Junior Dylan Esterling rounded out the team total in the third round with a 79. Also competing, freshman T.J. Blakemore shot 81 for a 247 total in 87th place.
Women falter down stretch
After a sixth place finish in round one of the Lady Northern Invitational, the Wisconsin women’s golf team dropped two spots to finish in eight place.
After a first-round 18-hole score of 309, second round play was suspended due to darkness and was finished before the final round Sunday morning. The delay seemed to affect all of the Badgers as scores escalated from Saturday’s rounds.
Malinda Johnson led the Badgers with a one-under par 71 in the first round, putting her in third place.
Playing on the Scarlet Course of the Ohio State University Golf Complex, the Badgers finished the tournament posting rounds of 309-312-318–939, three strokes behind Northwestern for eighth place. Leading the 15-team field was Texas, who shot a team total of 893.
Leading the way for UW throughout the tournament was Malinda Johnson, who finished fifth among individuals with rounds of 71-73-76–220. The next Badger finisher was sophomore Lindsay McMillan, who tied for 51st, shooting 83-80-78–241. Freshman Nicki Morse once again turned in consistent scores of 80-81-81–242 in a tie for 55th. Sophomore Jackie Obermueller (80-80-84) and freshman Carrissa Werlinger (78-83-83) both tied for 59th with totals of 244. Jill Ries also competed for the Badgers, carding rounds of 82-79-84–245.
