You have to make a stop and need to make it quick — if it's not past 10 p.m., where else to go but America's favorite 24-hour pharmacy? Recently I decided to bake a cheesecake, but I didn't have any more cream cheese! "To Walgreens!" I thought. After picking up a few necessities, I confidently strode toward the frozen foods, where I descried an empty cream cheese shelf. I asked a cashier when a shipment might arrive. "I would try Capitol Centre Foods. It's cheaper and quicker," was the reply. "The only things we stock regularly are cigarettes and soda." With that, I decided to peruse the store some more for those irregularly stocked treasures. Startlement came when UW senior Jordan Barringer shouted, "I've never loved Walgreens so much!" She needed earplugs, and she got her fix at Walgreens. According to employee and UW senior Liz Klink, most people come to Walgreens to get gum or something to drink. "But then you have the people who come and spend $200," she said. Hopefully they utilize the Walgreens EasySaver Catalog. From cleaners to candy, I finished shopping and checked out. As I took my bag from cashier and UW junior Dan Rothe, half my purchases fell through a hole in the side. "The bags are low-quality," he said. What's not to love about Walgreens? It's bigger than a boutique, but not quite an emporium — Walgreens is a convenient solution for many UW students. The runner-up was the Your Open Pantry on Regent Street. One must admire UW students' gustoes for locally owned, healthful alternatives to mainstream American consumerism.
