The Gritty, established in 1968 by former TV personality Marsh Shapiro, features everything from the famous Gritty Burger to the Veggie Burger to Vinnie's Pizza Burger — complete with mozzarella, marinara and spicy pepperoni. Other favorite burgers include the Teriyaki Burger (with homemade Teriyaki sauce, sautéed mushrooms and onions) and the BBC Burger (barbecue sauce, bacon and cheddar cheese). Most burgers are served on dark seeded buns or kaiser rolls, and they come with the option of side sauces like Honey Dijon, red pepper mayo, or the top-secret-recipe "Gritty sauce." For groups with non-burger fans, the restaurant also has an extensive menu of appetizers, salads and sandwiches, all at prices that range from about $6 to $9. The Nitty Gritty also serves bottled and tap beers as well as wine and sparkling wine. The best part about the Gritty is if you go on your birthday, you'll receive a mug and free beer or soda, along with desert, balloons and lots of attention. In fact, the restaurant calls itself Madison's Official Birthday Place. In the 1960s and '70s, the restaurant featured live bands seven nights a week. Today, the atmosphere is a little different, but the bustling environment is always fun and energetic with friendly hosts and servers. The Nitty Gritty, with its central location, is a tasty and convenient choice for lunch or dinner, especially before or after events at the nearby Kohl Center. Plus, you get free beer on your birthday, which is just sweet. The Nitty Gritty: 579 votes Dotty's: 482 votes
