MPD arrests man for substantial battery on Gilman Street

Victim was letting homeless suspect stay in her home when he suddenly turned violent

A 60 year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening for a battery incident that had occurred more than a week earlier.

According a Madison Police Department incident report, the  the suspect, William Grunwald, was staying at the victim’s downtown apartment at the time of the incident.

The victim, a 43 year-old female, said she sometimes lets the suspect stay at her apartment since he is homeless. On the night of Oct. 7, the suspect suddenly turned violent.

The suspect smashed the victim’s head against walls, knocked her down, put his boot on her throat and stomped her chest multiple times.

The victim was able to leave the apartment and ran onto the street to seek help.

Grunwald was arrested more than a week later for substantial battery, impeding breathing by pressure on throat or neck and bail jumping.
