Nine years since leaving University of Wisconsin, McBurney Disability Resource Center’s former director will return to lead the center over the summer.

Trey Duffy worked at UW from 1989 to 2006, and led the McBurney Center from 1989 to 2005. He will serve as interim director of the McBurney Center from May to August.

Duffy left UW in 2006 to work at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo for nine years.

Charles Hoslet named Vice Chancellor for University Relations after serving as interim

Duffy retired in February 2015 and has spent the last year traveling the globe. Partially motivated by his son’s recent move back to Madison, he decided to return to UW.

“It was just one of those rare opportunities where all the pieces fall together,” he said.

Duffy will replace current McBurney Director Cathy Trueba as she assumes a newly created position: UW’s director of compliance.

Though Duffy’s position as director is temporary, he’s likely to adapt to the position effortlessly due to his prior experiences at the McBurney Center and elsewhere, Trueba said.

Trueba said it will be nice to have someone like Duffy who is familiar with the McBurney program and has continued to work in the field even after he left UW.

UW names interim Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration

While his nine-year position as director of the Disability Resource Center and University Testing Services at California Polytechnic State University was similar to his role at UW, Duffy expects the responsibilities of an interim director to be a little bit different.

“On the interim, my goal is just to keep things moving as they have been and help the staff do the work that they need to do during this period of transition,” Duffy said.

Duffy’s position is full-time, allowing the center to move forward without a lull in productivity.

“I anticipate that Trey will bring some real energy and enthusiasm to continue the work that we’re doing here,” Trueba said.
