The Student Services Finance Committee Thursday unanimously approved the Student Transportation Board’s budget and postponed their budget decision for Student Activity Center Governing Board due to a dispute over the proper wage for a front desk position.
The Student Transportation Board’s budget of $4,703,100 passed with a 10-0 vote.
While discussing the budget for the Student Activity Center Governing Board, Vice Chair Brett DuCharme questioned the necessity for front desk workers’ wages to increase from $9 to $9.75.
But Rep. Brent Johnson argued that an increase in pay for those workers would increase the quality of applicants for the job.
Johnson said the job requires one to interact with others and be professional, which takes a certain degree of skill and training. Yet Johnson said he thinks $9.25 would be a fair compromise considering the dispute over raising the wage to $9.75.
But Rep. Zachary Pravato disagreed.
“I don’t think the front desk should get that increase,” Pravato said. “I think there are a lot of times where there is less work involved in a front desk job.”
Rep. Colin Barushok, however, disagreed, arguing $9.75 is a reasonable wage when considering minimum wage or cost of living.
Rep. Kyle Watter said if people are still applying to the job with the wage it is at, then SSFC doesn’t need to raise it.
Chair Thuy Pham said since they were unable to come to an agreement on the wage of the front desk, the issue would be tabled until the next meeting.
“We don’t have all the information we need to cut this and I don’t think we can cut it in good faith without more information,” Watter said.
SSFC will decide on the Student Activity Center Governing Board’s budget Monday, March 7.
