Madison man arrested for trying to join ISIS challenges competency ruling

A Madison man arrested for attempting to join ISIS last year has challenged an assessment that the defendant is competent to stand trial.

Joshua Van Haften’s attorney, Associate Federal Defender Joseph Bugni, announced Wednesday in a letter to Judge Stephen Crocker that Van Haften’s defense will seek its own competency evaluation for the defendant.

This is a direct challenge to an assessment ordered by Crocker that found Van Haften competent to stand trial.

In the letter, Bugni said he expects the defense’s evaluation to be completed by April 29.

Van Haften was tracked down and arrested last April after attempting to cross over into Syria from the Turkish border and join ISIS.
