Last Week Tonight host John Oliver called Wisconsin voter ID law into question in a criticism of voter ID laws in America Sunday night.

Oliver criticized Wisconsin’s 2011 voter ID law and ridiculed Rep. Joel Kleefisch, R-Oconomowoc, for his defense of the law.

To vote or not to vote: Many still unaware of voter photo ID law

Oliver responded to Kleefisch’s claim that requiring a voter photo ID is comparable to requiring a valid form of identification to purchase “stuffy nose medicine.”

“Voting is a right: if you take it away, you ruin democracy,” Oliver said “If you take away Sudafed the only thing you ruin is someone’s sleeve.”

According to the Last Week Tonight segment, a study found less than half of Wisconsin’s ID-issuing offices are open five days a week. An ID office in Sauk City is only open on the fifth Wednesday of every month, which means it would only be open one day in four of the months in 2016.

Oliver also called out legislators for “ghost voting,” or voting on behalf of another legislator. The segment featured a video that caught Kleefisch ghost voting.

In the video, Kleefisch said the footage was an “attempt at character assassination.”

“That’s not character assassination,” Oliver said. “That’s unedited footage of something you obviously did, and if anything that’s character auto-erotic asphyxiation.”
