A former employee of The Embassy apartments was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of stealing large sums of money from the building’s laundry rooms.

According to a Madison Police Department incident report:

Police arrested 23-year-old Carter Swopes around 1 a.m. Monday for allegedly stealing more than $6,000 in laundry money.

Swopes was caught on surveillance video entering a dozen separate laundry rooms at the apartment building on multiple occasions.

A manager decided to check surveillance video after noticing about $500 to $600 per month was missing from The Embassy’s usual laundry income.

The manager suspects Swopes may have created a master key to gain after-hours access to the building.
