A Madison Police Department officer took an unconventional approach when responding to a residential burglary at the College Court apartment complex Saturday.

Posing as the boyfriend of one of the victims, the officer was successfully able to recover the stolen property.

Two female students, ages 20 and 21, were victims of the burglary which occurred sometime after 4 a.m.

The burglar stole two backpacks that contained a laptop, an iPod, textbooks and one victim’s phone, according to an MPD statement. Police believe the door may have been left unlocked.

An investigating MPD officer left a voicemail on the victim’s stolen phone, claiming he was the victim’s boyfriend and was offering a $100 reward for the phone’s return, setting a Regent Street restaurant as the meet-up point.

Two men arrived with the victim’s backpack and uniformed officers moved in and arrested them, the statement said.

Andrew Adams, age 21, and Jeramie Sullivan, age 18, were arrested for receiving stolen property and on probation holds, according to the statement.

The suspects claimed they found the items and had no knowledge of the second backpack, which still has not been located.
