A fire Wednesday morning forced two people to jump from a balcony, injuring one, according to a statement from the Madison Fire Department.
The two people jumped from a second story balcony to evade the fire. They were also forced to drop down a two-year-old from the balcony to a resident waiting on the ground level. According to the statement, one individual who jumped sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to UW Hospital.
The fire began just before 9 a.m. at a Balsam Road apartment complex. According to the statement, firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes.
Firefighters entered the first floor apartment and saw flames rolling across the ceiling, they discovered the fire in the kitchen and quickly extinguished it, the statement said.
According to the statement, two apartments of the four-apartment complex were occupied during the time of the fire. After a search and rescue, crews found all occupants to be out of the building.
The fire displaced 11 residents and reportedly caused $80,000 in damage. According to the statement, the Red Cross and Good Shepard Lutheran Church assisted the displaced families.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
