Fire causes $30,000 worth of damage, leaves residents displaced

An electrical fire at a apartment caused $30,000 of property damages and left the five residents of the building displaced Monday.

According to a statement from the Madison Fire Department, the 200 S. Mills St. apartment is spilt into two-levels.

Two people in the upstairs apartment initially noticed signs of a fire around noon Monday when they heard crackling sounds and saw burns on the ceiling. Residents of the lower level apartment were not home at the time of the fire, the statement said.

Crews arrived on the scene to a small amout of smoke escaping from the roof of the house, according to the statement. The statement said the fire started in the attic, but had residents not been home to report the fire, damage could have been much greater.

The statement said the cause of the fire was an overloaded electrical circuit.
