Two people were robbed in separate incidents Thursday after having friendly interactions with the alleged suspects.
The first robbery of the evening involved a Madison woman being followed home after speaking briefly to a man at the BP station on Packers Avenue.
The assailant — described in the police report as a black male, 20 to 30 years of age, with a heavy build and “distinct ‘pretty’ eyes with long lashes” — made demands for the woman’s money as she approached her apartment building.
According to the report, the woman refused to turn over her money and this resulted in the two wrestling in the building’s foyer.
The woman managed to call for help and her 25-year-old son responded, chasing the man into the street.
The suspect then retrieved a handgun from a waiting car and was able to hold the son off before the driver of the car left the scene in the vehicle with the suspect making his getaway on foot shortly thereafter.
The suspect was unable to make off with any of the woman’s money and no injuries were reported. Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain commended the actions of the woman that ultimately resulted in an unsuccessful robbery.
“She called for help and she got help — she did everything right,” DeSpain said.
Not long after the first incident, a Detroit man was robbed near what was once the bus depot on Bedford Street after corresponding with a woman over Facebook, the report said.
According to DeSpain, the two had been exchanging messages through Facebook for nearly three weeks before the man traveled to Madison to meet her in person.
After a week that included dining and bowling, the man told the woman he had to return to his home due to his father being ill, the report said.
Then, rather than bringing the man to the Stoughton Road bus stop from which he arrived, she drove the man to the former site of the bus depot on Bedford.
The report stated after offering to retrieve the man’s luggage from the trunk, the suspect pulled out what was described by the victim as a “little bitty gun” and took the man’s money and wallet. DeSpain added the man’s luggage was also taken from him.
The suspect is described in the report as a female in her 30s with light skin and freckles, reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. The MPD has some leads but has yet to locate the suspect.
DeSpain reiterated the need for common sense when an individual finds themselves in a situation that may put them at risk.
“The general advice for people to walk safely in the city is to walk on well-traveled streets, go with a friend, and just generally be aware of your surroundings and situation,” DeSpain said. “It’s very important to make sure you know who you’re dealing with before you get involved.”
