A snow day for the record books…
The University of Wisconsin-Madison canceled a full day of classes for the first time in more than 30 years. The announcement came around 7:45 p.m. the night before, prompting students to celebrate in true UW fashion. The day off came right before finals week, allowing many the opportunity to have extra time to study.
Due to hazardous blizzard conditions, the city of Madison declared a snow emergency Tuesday and shut down all non-essential services for today.
Most city agencies and services will be closed, with only emergency services operating Wednesday.
“For the safety of our residents and our employees, only the city’s essential and emergency services will be in operation tomorrow,” Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said in a statement. “We encourage residents to stay safe at home for the duration of the blizzard.”
The snow emergency — in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday — enacts the alternate parking restrictions.
This means residents who must park their vehicle on the street Wednesday night should park it on the even numbered house side of the street. Residents are also allowed to park in city ramps for free from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. in a snow emergency. The statement also said residents are encouraged to keep vehicles off the streets, if possible.
Residents in violations of the rules could be subject to a $60 fine or could possibly be towed.
According to Jennifer Bacon, spokesperson for Madison Metro, there are no plans to suspend Metro bus service as of press time.
She said Madison Metro prepares for winter weather on a yearly basis and the suspension of service is rare.
Bacon said UW will notify students if they suspend bus services as a result of blizzard conditions, a decision which will be ultimately made by the Madison Streets Division and Cieslewicz.
Dane County has also shut down all non-essential services, according to a statement. However, emergency services such as the Sheriff’s Department, the highway department and the 911 center will still be operational.
Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain said MPD has not received any calls about major traffic accidents and injuries related to the snow as of press time. He added MPD does not plan to respond to calls involving fender benders or other minor traffic accidents.
“If someone is injured or a car is blocking the road, then they’re going to respond,” DeSpain said.
DeSpain also said MPD officers have been given the green light to place chains on squad cars for better traction on Madison roads.
The Madison Streets Division said Tuesday Madison residents can sign up for e-mail and text message alerts for when a snow emergency is declared.
