The Student Service Finance Committee rejected funding eligibility for the student organization Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow and approved funding for the organization Movimiento Estudantil Chicano de Aztl?n, or MEChA, Tuesday.
To be eligible to receive funding, a student group must have students as the main focus of their organization, reach all University of Wisconsin students, provide no academic credit for their service and have no equivalent on campus.
The majority of SSFC members said the services provided by CFACT did not meet the criteria necessary to receive funding.
“[CFACT] provide a lot of events, with no real services that have a provider and receiver,” SSFC representative Joseph French said. “Their main purpose is to get their word out, which is not what this committee is designed to fund.”
CFACT were denied funding by a vote of 0-3-1.
Several SSFC members said MEChA met the criteria to receive funding by providing a unique service directly to the UW community through music and mural programs tailored for individuals and organizations. The programs aim to improve group dynamics and develop leadership on campus.
Additionally, the committee said the group raises Chicano cultural awareness on campus.
“The group provides students with opportunities for leadership development through art,” SSFC Secretary Carl Fergus said. “University students are the principle focus and beneficiaries of the programs.”
The funding for MEChA was approved by a vote of 4-0-0.
The groups F.H. King Student for Sustainable Agriculture and Working Class Student Union also had their eligibility hearings at the meeting. Funding decisions for the two groups are scheduled for Thursday.
