Thousands of costumed revelers from across the country descended
upon State Street this weekend in keeping with what has become a
nationally recognized Madison tradition.
Friday, October 31 brought between 60,000 and 70,000 celebrants
to the city, and the holiday passed with relative calm.
Saturday’s celebration, dampened by intermittent showers that
held crowd numbers down, was marred by violence in the 500 block of
State Street, when police reacted to disturbances in the crowd.
According to police reports, celebrants launched projectiles
through windows of the University Inn and did not respond to police
demands to disband. Pepper spray was used to disperse the crowd
after the display windows of several businesses had been
shattered.
