Spring is the dating season, and love is in the air. You need the perfect dating itinerary to whisk away the winter blues and heat up the summer nights. If any of the following Herald staff suggestions appeal to you, feel free to call their extension and give their ideal date a try!
First we’d go through the drive-thru at Hardees ? she can get anything she wants. Then we’d watch the sunset by the county dump and watch the bears.
Rocky the Herald Comics Raccoon, Comics Editor, ext. 164
A Thursday night indie film because they’re so ridiculous they always make for good conversation, and then the Plaza. If you can get there early enough, it’s pretty quiet and chill on a Thursday.

Drinking absinthe with the girl of my choice while watching the National Basketball Championship Game. At halftime, I’d read Norman Mailer to her while she read Virginia Woolf to me. And at the end of game, we’d celebrate the trophy presentation with great sex.
Lars Russell, Editor in Chief, ext. 140
I’d say dinner and drinks first so then you can actually talk to the person. But you need to follow up with a concert, preferably a moe. concert, because then you can lose all your inhibitions and dance your ass off… you’ll know right off the bat whether they can put up with you – because I’m absolutely out of my mind at concerts.
Cristina Daglas, College Editor, ext. 145
My ideal date is anything where you end up in bed and she buys me a burrito afterwards. Actually, she should make me a sandwich because then you know they’re talented in the kitchen as well as in other areas.
Bobby Chao, Associate Photo Editor, ext. 160
Go to the terrace, enjoy some pitchers of beer and smoke some herb, because people are a lot more relaxed when they are drunk or high.
Heidi Olsen, Managing Editor, ext. 141
Six forties at the Terrace … oh, a date with a girl you mean?
Eric Cullen, Opinion Editor, ext. 157
Noodles, Skittles, mini golf and the movie “Caveman” would all have to be included. I don’t go out with girls unless there’s “Caveman” there. You’ve got the excellent meal there ? good food, cheap price, Skittles ? the perfect dessert, mini-golf ? relaxing, and then “Caveman” ? every emotion wrapped up in one. “Caveman” is like the relationship, you’ve got the ups, you’ve got the downs. Atouk gets the girl, he loses the girl, and in the end everything works out, just like you’re hoping that the relationship will.
Derek Montgomery, Opinion Content Editor, ext. 157
To understand my perfect date, it’s important that we go canoeing or sailing out on the lakes because it’s unique, it’s fun and it’s not like you’re just going to a bar. After the water, it’s important to walk around town, ending up in a kitchen talking about dressing up and going to someplace really nice like Magnus. But we spend so much time talking and laughing in the kitchen, we say screw it, and we just go eat outside somewhere where we don’t have to change clothes and we can just talk outside.
John Buchel, State Editor, ext. 143
We’d start out getting coffee downtown, then going to a movie like “A Beautiful Mind” to keep the mood serious. Then getting a bottle of cheap wine and drinking it in the park, because it’s a little different than a normal date, and you can get a chance to actually talk to the person.
Molly Webb, Arts Editor, ext. 156
Go to dinner at Luther’s Blues or somewhere where music is playing, because it’s a fun atmosphere and there’s no pressure. That way if the person is really boring, you can talk about the band. Afterwards you can either meet up with friends for drinks or go back to their place if it goes well.
Nicole Rosario, In-Depth Editor, ext. 155
Going somewhere cute for a nice dinner and then going out for a good drink ? not a beer, because I can have a beer by myself but I can’t have a cocktail by myself. Then it would end outside, sitting on the porch.
Beth McGrath, Copy Editor, ext. 147
I would go to the Timberlodge Steakhouse because it’s so cute and it’s a place where you wear a skirt and actually go off campus.
Caley Meals, ArtsEtc. Writer, ext. 156
The best date in Madison is at the Mariners Inn. It has a romantic atmosphere but it’s not too intimate, there’s a fire, it’s right on the lake and you can look at the yachts. I like to just go walking and get the chance to know the other person.
Kristen Petruzzi, Page Designer, ask the operator for her
We’d go to the Botanical Gardens, because it’s a somewhat different thing to do, and then have dinner at Smokey’s because it’s a nice restaurant.
Drew Hansen, Associate Sports Editor, ext. 153
A romantic dinner on the Square and a musical at the Civic Center would be perfect. If things go well, I’d suggest we go to the Dane for some wine in their candle-lit cellar; if not, I’d suggest he take me home.
Julia Kraschnewski, News Content Editor, ext. 167
Playing darts at the Paradise Lounge.
Matt Scherling, News Editor, ext. 142
Coffee on State Street, Scrabble on Library Mall, grab a quick dinner somewhere and maybe go see a play at the Civic Center. It’s comfortable and laid back ? just like me.
Kat Krueger, Copy Editor, ext. 147
A day at James Madison Park swimming, lying around and grilling brats ? complete with cribbage, frisbee and a Ben Folds concert later that night.
Michelle Orris, City Editor, ext. 144
