A New Year’s Eve weekend in San Antonio awaits the Wisconsin Badger football team and its fans for the 10th annual Alamo Bowl, set for action Dec. 28.
Colorado has been selected as Wisconsin’s Big 12 opponent for the bowl.
This game will mark the sixth encounter between the two teams and the first since 1995. Colorado holds a 4-0-1 record against Wisconsin.
Visiting Wisconsin fans are encouraged to “experience some of the sights and sounds of the holiday season in San Antonio.”
Some of these festivities include the River Walk and New Year’s Eve Bash.
The Alamo Bowl will also sponsor a pep rally for both teams on the evening of Dec. 26.
A University of Wisconsin pep rally will take place Dec. 27, along with a scheduled band concert.
The city’s River Walk will be decorated with over 100,000 lights each evening to help guide fans to the restaurants, clubs, galleries and shops along the San Antonio River.
A New Year’s Eve party will take place on South Alamo Street and throughout the La Villita historic district.
Live music, children’s activities, street performers and food booths will be present at the bash.
The countdown to 2003 will conclude with a fireworks display above the 750-foot Tower of the Americas.
UW is known for attracting fans to events nationwide.
In past years, bowl games have attracted large numbers of Badger fans, helping to increase UW’s reputation for an excellent fan base.
In turn, UW fans helped break Nevada’s outdoor attendance record this year at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas football game.
The new record stands at 42,075, with Badger fans accounting for more than 15,000 of those people.
“We are looking forward to the Badgers to bring their power-running attack along with their devoted fans and outstanding football tradition to this year’s Alamo Bowl,” Alamo Bowl Chairman Diane Roth said in a statement.
The Badgers (7-6), led by head coach Barry Alvarez, trek to San Antonio for their first bowl game in the area. Alvarez has a 6-1 bowl record, including three Rose Bowl victories.
“We’re thrilled to be going to San Antonio to play the Alamo Bowl presented by MasterCard,” Alvarez told the Alamo Bowl committee. “We are really happy to have been selected to represent the Big Ten in such a great bowl game. Our fans are already making plans to travel to Texas, and we will cover the River Walk in red.”
The Holiday San Antonio Vacation Experience program is being offered to help UW fans finance their trips to the bowl.
This program features savings at over 40 hotels in the San Antonio area. The San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau and local hospitality partners are offering the Holiday S.A.V.E. program.
