The University of Wisconsin campus hosted parents of new freshmen this past weekend. Parents were given insight into the campus and city where their children are receiving their education.
“We’re proud to offer parents a chance to share in their child’s college experiences,” said Wisconsin Alumni Association president Paula Bonner. “A parent’s involvement and support is key to a student’s success, and this action-packed weekend provides a good understanding of what the UW-Madison campus is like when school is in session.”
Among other things, parents were given the opportunity to see the UW campus on campus tours, were involved in many dorm activities and were even given the opportunity to attend classes with their children Friday.
Parents were also encouraged to attend the Wisconsin Badger football game Saturday against Illinois, with a pre-game party at the UW Fieldhouse.
Besides campus, parents could be seen visiting other Madison landmarks such as State Street, the State Capitol Building, Henry Vilas Zoo and George Vitense Golf Land.
“I think this is a great city with a beautiful campus,” said Al Johnson, father of a UW freshman. “I am very happy my son is attending this college.”
John Robinson described his Friday night activities with his daughter, who is attending the UW to study business.
“We went to West Towne Mall, then back over to State Street to pick up some Badger stuff from Steve and Barry’s for the game,” he said. “I can’t believe they sell everything for under $20. That’s great for temporary Badger fans like me.”
Other parents expressed their feelings about the events that took place on State Street during the Halloween celebration.
“I did hear about the riot from my daughter,” said Lois Anderson. “But I don’t think that was a typical situation and anything to be too concerned about.”
Before parents left, they were invited to attend a University Theatre performance of “The Physicists” at Mitchell Theater Saturday night. “The Physicists” is a dark comedy about three people being strangled at an insane asylum which is home to three brilliant physicists.
