Police arrested two men, one described as having a “short bushy afro” for assaulting a resident on Northport Drive with a BB gun. The suspects, brandishing “handguns” forced their way into the victim’s apartment and the assailants struggled with the resident, at which time one of them shot the victim in the leg. The injury turned out to be minor as the two men fled the apartment and the victim discovered the wounded had been caused by a BB, or perhaps a pellet.

Officers arrested Cruz on a charge of endangering safety, however, when they discovered he had been the one armed with a knife. The victim, Alex Garcia, had apparently thrown an object at Cruz in self-defense. “The victim was not injured,” the police report said.

Media responding to dispatches of a police standoff at the Super 8 Hotel on W. Beltline Hwy were told to park in the Perkins parking lot below the Perkins sign. A man holed up in one of the hotel rooms, considered armed and dangerous, had been threatening the lives of officers at the scene. MPD located the man in connection with an undisclosed felony investigation when they spotted his car outside the hotel. They were in telephone contact with the man for several hours but after he broke off contact with negotiators, officers entered his room to find him lying on the floor with self-inflicted fatal wounds.
