Student drinking could be altered

Students’ alcohol consumption could change next semester if proposed recommendations go through.

The recommendation to restrict drink specials is scheduled to come before the City Council May 21. Although the issue will come up while school is out of session, Kent Palmer, chair of the ALRC subcommittee that drafted the report, said he would work to ensure any recommendation affecting students would not be put into legislation until after students return in the fall.

“I want to conduct business in the light of day,” Palmer said. “I won’t introduce any legislation, and I will discourage others from doing so as well.”

Also next fall, the Unions will extend their hours until bar time Thursday through Saturday, offering beer until close. However, the 46-oz. cups will not be sold. Chancellor Wiley announced UW would stop selling the “big gulps” and hoped to instead revert to using plastic pitchers.
