Semester recap: State Street

Everyone knows it and loves it well. It’s the center of the city, stretching from the Capitol to Library Mall, and soon it will receive a $15 million makeover, $1 million of which will come from the federal government.

After much public debate, State Street’s bus stops, bike racks, streetlights and trees will all see new designs.

Plans have been in the works since December 1999, but designers and planners are hoping to begin construction by at least spring 2003.

Various features of the street were more highly debated than others, including Elizabeth Link Peace Park at the corner of State and Gilman Streets. The area could be used for a potential gathering spot for different events, but some have worried it will disrupt the regulars that call the park home.

“It’s my hope that the committee should be able to come up with a good solution that will make everyone happy,” Ald. Todd Jarrell, District 8, said.
Only time will tell how State Street will actually develop, but plans are officially in the works.
