After skating to a 3-3 tie Friday night, the No. 3 Wisconsin men’s hockey team will try to pull out a win tonight against No. 1 Denver.
Down 2-0 early in the third period, the Badgers scored three unanswered goals, starting with a Blake Geoffrion tip on the power play. Denver tied the game up with just under two minutes remaining, and the game went to overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra period, but Denver controlled the play for the better part of the five-minute overtime. UW goaltender Scott Gudmandson made a couple of crucial saves to keep the Pioneers from ending the game with a ‘W.’
DU goaltender Marc Cheverie will get a chance at starting a new shutout streak against UW tonight. Before Geoffrion’s goal to get Wisconsin in the board, Cheverie had a 183-minute shutout streak over the Badgers.
Head coach Mike Eaves and his players were sick of hearing about Denver’s 11-2 mark at the Kohl Center since 2002, as well as the fact UW hasn’t won an overtime game in its last 21 attempts. The easy remedy for those questions? Pull out a clutch win tonight.
