Not-So Celebrity Playlist of the Week

Someone might wonder where I would even start with a library
of over 36,000 songs. I mean, if you hit shuffle on my iPod you could get
anything from Ray Charles to La Oreja de Van Gogh to Tool to Britney Spears.
Surprisingly though, this playlist came to my mind within minutes and believe
me, each song is worth the listen. As I did just get back from a year in the UK,
half of the bands featured below are straight from there. I just can’t shake
the catchy British pop. It’s irresistible, and hopefully you’ll find this playlist
irresistible, too.

1.    “The
Right Type” – Chromeo

I actually discovered this song through a
Tumblr I follow, musicforyourcoffe, and that’s precisely what it is. Wake up,
drink your coffee (because we’re college students and we always need caffeine)
and jam out to this incredible retro beat- a great start to your day. If you’re
in to electro-funk, definitely check out this unique Canadian band.

2.    “She
Needs Me” – Fyfe Dangerfield

This one makes almost anything fun with its
upbeat tempo and melodic piano. You can even clean your room with this song on and
find you are enjoying yourself thoroughly. A wholly talented musician, Dangerfield
impresses with the rest of his first solo album, Fly Yellow Moon.

3.    “Starry
Eyed” – Ellie Goulding

For those of you that love pure and simple pop
music and for those who love a bit of that indie sound, you’ll be “starry-eyed”
for this song. It was an instant hit in the UK, and I’m sure if the radios
decided to pick it up, it would be here too.

4.    “The
High Road” – Broken Bells

I love the Shins to bits, so when I found
out their lead singer joined another band, I had to download the single straight
away. They just started playing this song back in California where I’m from, so
I think I can still class it as non-celebrity. I predict it won’t be for long though. This is one of those songs
that get stuck in my head all the time; I find myself having to put it on
repeat to completely satisfy me.

5.    “Don’t
Ask” – Blood Red Shoes
I’m one of those people who love a rockin’ female and male vocal duo, so when I
discovered Blood Red Shoes I was thrilled. This song has a bundle of energy and
it makes me wish I was one of the Veronicas sisters so I could go on stage and
rock out. Unfortunately, air instruments are all I’ve got going for me.

6.    “We
No Speak Americano” – Yolanda be Cool and DCup

This is definitely one for strolling to
class, though I warn- you won’t be able to stop yourself from dancing, and
people will see you. This was a club
favorite in Europe, no doubt why. It’s light on the singing, but as soon as you
do hear the Italian vocals, you’ll wish you can sing along.

7.    “Doubt”
– Delphic

This song is pure fun, from beginning to
end, and who doesn’t like to have fun? It has just the right amounts of
electronic and instruments for my tastes. It is one of my feel-good and get
ready songs.

8.    “Stylo”
– Gorillaz feat. Bobby Womack & Mos Def

The Gorillaz have been around for a long
time, and while this song might not be like their other hits, it shouldn’t be
overlooked. To put it simply, it’s a cool song. The beat is catchy, and the
vocals dreamy. I find myself in a different world when I listen to it.

9.    “Laredo”
– Band of Horses

Band of Horses has been one of my favorite
bands since I was a freshman in high school, and they make me fall in love with
them all over again with each album. It was hard to pick a song from their
latest, Infinite Arms, but finally I
settled on this one. The almost-harsh guitar contrasted with the sweet vocals
will be a treat for your ears.

10. “Winter
Winds” – Mumford and Sons

Though many of you know their latest single,
Little Lion Man, I urge you to go out and listen to this song. It’s not quite
as dramatic, but it has just as much feeling. Besides its unique folksy sound and simple rhymes, the beauty
of this song comes from the fact that we can probably all relate to having our
head tell us one thing while our heart tell us the opposite. “Winter Winds” is
a great song for winding down and reflecting.
